Julep Maven :: September 2012 It Girl Box

whoa, baby... my legs are killing me from trotting yesterday! i think i used muscles i've never before used in my entire life :D i've had so much paperwork to do today that i haven't been able to exercise (at first i was like... YES! but now that i'm stiff... i def should have done something!)... i'll have to get back on the wagon tomorrow!

i got my September Julep box in It Girl today! they partnered up with fashion designerTrina Turk for their fall colors... and they are... different. the polishes are kind of ketchup, mustard, and... cappuccino. i'm not thrilled with the colors, but the formulas seem amazing. i slapped each of them down on a color wheel and all three were super opaque! the extra treatie this month was a magnet (i'm guessing designed by Trina Turk), but it's really creepy to me. here's the box (the packaging was adorable this month!), let me know what you think of the magnet, it's the top card with the girl on it!

and here are the polishes! they look sneakingly similar to the OPI Germany collection... i just ordered that, hopefully it will get here soon so i can compare!

even if i end up not liking two of the colors, the red is a definite win! is there a standout color to you?

i'm off to do more paperwork! Ria :)

My First Stamping Mani!

today was my horseback riding lesson! i'm happy to report that i finally succeeded in posting a trot... not that i'm any good yet, but it's bounds ahead of where i was when i started (and nearly fell off!). i rode a different horse today, she was much easier to ride than Aramis... not nearly so bouncy! she is also way smaller, she looks like a pony standing next to him :)

i wanted to share my first attempt at doing a stamping mani that i actually intended to wear out. i used Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Purple Haste as my base color and used a Konad stamping plate with Konad White. i've played with using some China Glaze polishes, and i wasn't happy with the way they came out! i like using Konad polishes... i get that feeling of using the right tool for the job. i'm happy with the way this mani turned out, i love the purple and white together. i did smudge my middle finger stamp a bit, but this is one of those things where practice really helps! definitely, the more you do it, the easier it gets :D

Konad White dries dull and seems like it would pick off easily, so you definitely want a topcoat. i used my trusty Seche Vite!

we're already halfway through the week, i hope it's going well for everyone! Ria :)

Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Purple Haste

i ordered the OPI Germany collection today! i remembered i had a bunch of points to use on Amazon, so i was able to get the whole collection free... doesn't get better than that :D i've been trying to decide whether or not i wanted to get the whole thing... but i love to buy the whole shebang of OPI's big collections. it sounds like shipping might be a bit slow, but since it was included in the price of purchase, i can't really complain :)

today's polish is Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Purple Haste from their new Limited Edition collection. this is one you need to pick up to appreciate... it looks like a regular old dark purple pearl, but when you look closer you realize that it is lightly interspersed with blue microglitter! it isn't loaded down with glitter and they are tiny, but they are definitely there :) the formula is awesome, two easy coats for full opacity! it dries a little dull and lumpy looking, so you'll definitely want to add a topcoat.

two coats Purple Haste, one coat Seche Vite.

this is my first time using the Insta-Dri line, and i'm pretty impressed. the formula is great and i liked the brush... it was nice and fat. the bristles were a bit jagged at the tips, i'm not sure if that's just this bottle or the whole line. one thing to keep in mind is that it only has .31 fl oz, rather than the standard .5! you can find these at most places that sell drugstore polishes for under $6.

tomorrow's post will have my first real attempt at a stamped mani! Happy Tuesday! Ria :)

Essie Coat Azure

this working out thing is no fun! for the last two days i've been doing a Dancing With The Stars workout dvd, which is okay... but still kind of boring. i generally use some type of dance dvd when i exercise, which makes it seem less like exercise than a traditional workout dvd. do you guys have any dvds that you really enjoy working out to? i appreciate all your suggestions!

today's polish is Essie Coat Azure... this is the first time in a while that i've featured a regular Essie polish! i really don't understand the name... maybe it's from a collection that would make it make more sense? let me in on it if you know! Coat Azure is medium blue creme that leans warm and slightly dusty... and has the slightest hint of shimmer, which is almost invisible except in really bright light. the formula is outstanding, i used two coats, but one thick coat would do it! you will definitely want to use a topcoat with this one as it dries fairly dull.

two coats Coat Azure, one coat Seche Vite.

can't believe it's Monday again... weekends go by way too fast! of course, i'm always excited for it to be Wednesday for my horseback riding lesson! which day of the week are you the most excited for? Ria :)

Tangle Teezer Salon Elite Detangling Hairbrush

another day... another restaurant! we like to go out on the weekends, since during the week my husband is pretty tied up with schoolwork. today we tried a Chinese place, it was quite good... but, again, differently done than in Virginia. somehow it's still boggling my mind how differently food tastes, even at chain restaurants like Burger King. Mama Pawlish thinks they use a lot less salt... which would explain why i like it less!

i'm so excited to share the Tangle Teezer Salon Elite detangling hairbrush with you guys! i was given this for review at Cosmoprof, and i was bouncing off the walls to try it. it's one of those things i had picked up to purchase multiple times and had just not ever gone ahead and made the commitment... i now wish i had earlier! this thing is magical! my hair texture is very fine and it tangles super easily now. this brush glides through my hair, easily pulling apart and straightening out snaggles. the best part is, it is so much less painful than using a traditional brush! you can still feel it, and if you hit a big knot, it will still hurt... but much, much less. this is the Salon Elite model, which is made to be used with dry and wet hair. i use it for everything, including distributing products like leave in conditioner evenly throughout my hair (which i've used combs to do in the past!).

i took a bunch of pictures of packaging and the brush itself to really give you a feel of what it looks like! (of course i chose the pink one!)

starting off with the packaging...

meet the inventor!

i love that the side of the box breaks down the brush!

these next pictures are of the brush itself :)

the bristles alternate between a row of short bristles and a row of long bristles. all the bristles are quite flexible, but firm enough to pull through the hair!

i was a little concerned that the brush would be difficult to hold on to... but the shape makes it easy to grip, even for my tiny little hands!

when cleaning, hair comes out fairly easily, but it's very difficult to get every single piece out. i think most hairbrushes are like that, but it does bother me. i've been using it for about a month now and some of the bristles aren't completely straight anymore, but none have broken off. i go back and forth between whether i miss having a handle on the brush or not... you do have a lot of control by having the brush completely in your hand. i really am in love with this brush... i rarely use any other brushes anymore!

here's the official Tangle Teezer website! www.tangleteezer.com/ it's a UK based company, but it looks like other countries can order, and the price is tor the Salon Elite plus shipping is around $20 USD. i did find it here on Amazon for $16.99, and i've seen the Original Tangle Teezer in different hair salons!

have you tried a Tangle Teezer before? would you consider giving one a try? let me know what you think! Ria :)

Essie Luxeffects Stroke Of Brilliance

Mr. Pawlish and i decided to try a new restaurant today called Tarpy's Roadhouse, thinking it would be a casual steak place. turns out it's pretty swanky on the inside... you can get away with being casual, but they seem to prefer for you to sit outside! the food was good... but i had to completely change how they prepare it, because i'm not really into 'modern' food preparation... i just don't want my foods on top of each other! it's also quite expensive... California is still taking some getting used to!

today i'm happy to share Essie Luxeffects Stroke Of Brilliance with you all! i was super excited to see that Essie added another Luxeffect to their line... and it's blue! the composition of glitter is exactly the same as Essie's glitter Luxeffects A Cut Above (pink) and  Set In Stones (silver). it's comprised of large hex glitters and microglitter. in the light the color is light blue, while in the shadow it looks like different tones of navy. this polish is a fabulous topcoat... and it would also make an awesome sandwiching polish.

two coats Zoya Shay, one coat Stroke Of Brilliance, one coat Seche Vite.

i really love how this mani turned out... it reminds me of speckled brown eggs. of course... if they had shiny blue speckles, there would something majorly wrong with those eggs! hope everyone is having a great weekend! Ria :)

Civilian Nails of the Week... Mama Pawlish!

we tried a new Italian place today, hoping that it would be Northern Italian food like we enjoy (especially since we are Northern Italian!). sadly, it was like most place around here... Cali puts their own spin on food. it's not bad, but it's also not what i'm looking for. they had meat and spinach in the manicotti... i was SO disappointed, because manicotti with cheese is one of my all time fave foods. if you live around Monterey, please suggest some good places to eat :)

you read the title right, today's Nail Civilian is none other than Mama Pawlish! her nails are absolutely amazing... and does nothing but file them! aren't genetics crazy?? my nails are brittle and peel, hers are rock hard and basically perfect. am i jelly? well, yeah! the funny thing is, she doesn't like them to be long... so i asked her to grow them out and then let me take a picture, just so i could show off how completely gorgeous they are :D

i can't get over how white the tips of her nails are... before mine were yellow from all the polish, they were fairly clear. i actually used to use a special white pencil (do they still make those?) to color under the tips with to make them look white! Mama Pawlish actually didn't start letting me really use nail polish until middle or high school... guess i'm making up for lost time!

do you have amazing nails and aren't part of the nail industry? i'd love for you to be one of my Nail Civilians! comment below or shoot me an email RiaLovesPawlish@gmail.com! Happy Friday! Ria :)

Zoya Shay

so i'm trying to start exercising because i'm way to out of shape to ever become a great horseback rider... who knew you needed to be such an athlete?! headed over to the community center today and used their pool... i can't believe how out of shape i am! i actually used to be on the swim team! *le gasp* i have a question... my ears were killing me when i got out of the water, so i guess i need to get ear plugs, but the question is, why does the pool make my ears hurt??

today's polish is Zoya Shay, a gorgeous nudey, mannequin hand shade!  it is ever so slightly pearlescent, but the effect is very sneaky. this nude has strong pink undertones and is a bit dark for my extremely fair skin... but all those pink undertones helps it blend really well into my skin. while i love the mannequin effect, i think this polish would be absolutely stunning on darker skin tones... just effortlessly chic! the opacity is good with the polish, two coats was all it took. the formula was a bit thick and slightly sticky... but something happened with this bottle at the store. once i got Mr. Pawlish to pry it open, i saw that there was polish all around the top of the opening of the bottle and a bit down the ribbing... so it was definitely used before it came to me! leave a comment please if you've used this shade and experienced a different formula :D

two coats Shay, one coat Seche Vite.

i know shades like this aren't everyone's cuppa, but i think they are so elegant! what do you think? would you sport a mannequin hand? Ria :)

Liebster Award!

i wanted to do a polish review today, but fates have intervened for me to do this blogger award! one reason is that as i was getting onto Aramis (the horse) today, i must have put my hand down on a wasp... because i got stung on my ring finger pad! so, i'm in no hurry to dip that bad boy into acetone!

Layla Softouch Effect 04 Neon Pink

today was the dreaded chore day... the grocery store. i just hate it! it's so boring, and you spend all this money on food that you could be spending on something fun... like nail polish! or jewelry! :D since my mom moved in with us, it's at least a little better because she's more fun to go with. both Mr. Pawlish and i hate it so much we always used to fight while we were there... wow, that just sounds ridiculous now that i've typed it out! the good thing is we usually have taco salad every grocery store day since all the produce is fresh... and i love taco salad :D

today we have a beauty from Layla, it's from their new Softouch Effect line (which is part of their Ceramic Effect line) and is 04 Neon Pink. the ceramic effect polishes do have names, but they aren't on the bottles (at least that i can find!). the Softouch line is comprised of polishes that do not dry to a shiny finish, instead they dry down to a velvety matte... but unlike traditional matte polishes, these should stay matte for a long time! other 'matte' polishes are made from a powder that quickly loses the non-shiny effect. Softouch polishes stay matte because they are made with a wax... now how exactly it all works i don't understand, but so far so good. if the polishes lose their matte look, i will post again!

04 Neon Pink is not really neon, but it is a gorgeous pink! it's a very saturated fuchsia pink with blue and pink shimmers. you basically get two polishes in one with the Softouch line because you can wear it matte... but you can also add a topcoat to make it look like a traditional polish! adding on a topcoat really brings out the shimmers :) the formula is great, two coats for full opacity... and it has a nice wide brush!

two coats Neon pink, my pointer nail has a coat of Seche Vite so you can see the difference with topcoat!

this is my first time ever wearing a nail polish that isn't shiny... i still feel like i like a high shine finish the best. i'm going to keep these as is for now and see if they grow more on me over the next day! even if you only like shiny polishes, i highly recommend this one... i absolutely would buy this just to use like a traditional polish!

in the US you can get these polishes at www.NinjaPolish.com, they carry the most complete line of Laylas. you can find assorted Layla polishes at www.Zappos.comwww.Ulta.com and in Ulta stores! sadly, Ulta only has some of the Hologram Effect and Magneffect polishes. 04 Neon Pink retails on Ninja Polish for $9.95 for 10mL (which is a bit smaller than the size of polishes we usually see here in the US).

what do you think of these? would you wear them as they are meant to be worn, or would you tack on a topcoat? Happy Tuesday! Ria :)

ncLA Poolside Party, All Eyes On Me!

i just don't have good luck with the English tack store in my area. they had ordered riding breeches for me... but they ordered them in beige, when i asked for black! i went ahead and tried them on... and they looked horrid, just as i'd feared. you have to be thin to wear skin tight pants that color! so i guess i'm either going to go back to the Western tack store, or just order the ones i want offline. it's one of those... gee, i wish i knew that my pants were ordered in the wrong color while i was holding a black pair at another store! it's not a big deal, i have my boots and my half chaps, so i'm pretty good to go.

today's polish is ncLA Poolside Party, All Eyes On Me!, the exclamation mark is part of the name! it's a long name for a relatively simple polish... but don't be fooled by its simplicity, it's really pretty :) it's a light/medium peach creme that still manages to be quite bright. in some lights, it leans towards orange sherbert! the formula is great, the first coat was a little scary and streaky, but it evened out perfectly with the next. the trick with this polish is to use a really light touch and spread the polish gently out over the nail. i used that method for both coats on my right hand, and i had much less streakiness than on my left, where i applied the first coat with a bit more pressure. i wasn't sure if i was going to like this polish on my skin tone, but its brightness really makes it work. this polish dries shiny, but i like it better with a topcoat!

two coats Poolside Party, one coat Seche Vite.

this is my first polish review in what feels like forever! since i took a long chunk to do other things, there will be a lot more polish reviews coming up... let me know if you have any requests. Happy Monday! Ria :)

Basically... Poshe AHA Cuticle Care

did a pretty thorough job on the hermit crab tank today, they needed everything refreshed and the sand wet down. those are some happy crabbies right now, everyone is out exploring :) they live in a 55 gallon aquarium that is a third full of sand (so they can bury under and molt), which means they have quite a bit to explore!

today's review is a Basically...  post for your cuticles! i was formerly was using Sally Hansen Nails & Cuticles Hand Creme, but i was given a tube of Poshe AHA Cuticle Care at Cosmoprof and i'm in love with it! it's really moisturizing and i can tell a huge difference when i use it. the best part is that the scent is very faint and doesn't bother me at all. that was my major issue with the Sally Hansen cream... the strong citrus was tolerable, but not preferable! another great benefit is that it sinks in quickly and doesn't dry shiny... that way i can use it when i'm swatching :)

Poshe AHA claims to exfoliate and hydrate, as per the packaging... it definitely hydrates, i'm not sure exactly what it means by exfoliate. there aren't any polishing particles, so all the exfoliation must be chemical. i do have fewer hangnails when i use it faithfully... but whether that's just because of my cuticles being really hydrated or to the exfoliating properties of AHA, i couldn't say!

check out the packaging, AHA is a small tube which comes in a cardboard box.

the tube itself looks like this...

the next photo will be of the nozzle of the tube... it's elongated, which makes application easy. i generally put a thin line of cream around my nail on each finger, then massage it into my cuticles. any left over product i smooth down the rest of my fingers and hands!

i'm so happy to have found this product! the only downside is that is a fairly small tube. it retails for $6.99 at Ulta, so the price is quite reasonable for this type of product! the tube also suggests use on elbows and feet, but i haven't tried it out on those, yet. if it works as a well as it does on my cuticles, it will be awesome! that brings it around to the drawback of the small tube, i feel like i don't want to 'waste' it by having to use a large quantity of on a bigger body part, like my feet!

have any of you tried this product out? let me know what you think! Ria :)

Haulage... Maybelline Scene on the Runway!

i had a date day with my husband today... which was lovely :) we stopped in at Rite Aid since there was one at the mall where we were because i wanted to see if i could find more Revlon Moon Candy polishes... i found two i didn't have yet, but the last two (the blue ones!) still elude me. the great thing i stumbled across was a Maybelline Color Show fall collection! i hadn't heard any rumbling about one, so i was delighted to see this one! the colors were so beautiful i decided to just get the whole thing... it's a total of six polishes. they retail for $3.99 at Rite Aid... one thing to keep in mind is that Color Show polishes are about half the size of polishes like OPI... which may explain them being half the price!

the collection is called Scene on the Runway... here's the display!

here's a look at the colors closeup! there are a few duochromes (including a try at the infamous Chanel Peridot)... they are a bit too sheer in my opinion, but i will have reviews on all them :) i'm most excited about the polish at the very bottom of the picture, Downtown Brown... it's just like my favorite eye shadow, which is Lancome Brown Mist. they are both browns with tealy green reflects... so beautiful!

and here are the two Revlon Moon Candies i got my little paws on!

i plan on having a review up tomorrow... i'm not sure of what, though! i can't believe i haven't done a review in so long... i plan to be getting back into the groove of those. let me know if there's anything you've seen on the blog that you would like to see a review of sooner rather than later! Ria :)

Haulage... With A Great Find!

got my horseback riding boots today! i'm really enjoying collecting all the pieces for my new hobby... but then... i pretty much just love shopping :D which brings me to my collective haul! these polishes were bought over the past few weeks, so i thought i'd do one big post with my most exciting find up first!

here it is... OPI DS Sapphire! i finally got pedicure (my feet were scary!) and when i went to pay, i saw this baby sitting in their case of polishes available for purchase. i was about to pass out! it's a beautiful light blue linear holo... i can't believe how strong the holographic properties are, it's nothing like the other DS polishes i own.

these are the three polishes i chose to get from the China Glaze Bohemian collection... the only other one i was interested in i was lucky enough to receive as a review sample :D

i got this pack of Revlons from Big Lots... i was irritated to get home and realize i already had the peach colored one, though! the price was still great for the three i didn't have, i think i only paid about six dollars.

here are some blue polishes i've picked up on my travels lately... i had no idea i bought so much blue lately! i guess it shows that it's my favorite polish color, huh? the blue glitter is a new installment in Essie's Luxeffects line!

all of the rest of the polishes i'm going to show i got at Marshall's! there was actually another set of Jessica minis, but since i usually hate minis i didn't get it. i wish i did now, the quality of the polishes is awesome! the little pack they came in is really cute... but i realized the polishes in there weren't what should have come with the set! so, i took another picture with the polishes out of the pack. the minis with the black lids have a much better quality brush than the ones with the silver lids. i do still prefer full size bottles by far though... i'm hoping Marshall's gets some of those in so i can try out the 'real' Jessica brush!

and last up, two packs of Barielles!

i'm trying out a new way to do Haulage posts, using multiple smaller pictures instead of one large picture with all the polishes in it. let me know which you prefer! have a fabulous weekend! Ria :)

Cosmoprof 2012... Ruby Wing

i saw this post today from Nouveau Cheap which said that bottles of Essie Starry Starry Night had been spotted at Big Lots here in the US... so  i duly located a Big Lots relatively close to me... but *le sigh* nothing! i did, however, make a spectacular find today, along with some other great stuff... that will all be in my haulage post tomorrow :D

today is my last Cosmoprof post! we are checking out Ruby Wing, a sister line Color Club, which is comprised completely of nail polishes that change color in the sun! these aren't available for purchase yet... but i will definitely let you know when i hear something! on to some examples of the goods :)

the first picture is the polish in regular lighting, the second is what the polish will look like in the sun!

massive difference, right? this next picture is one of their displays, the one after is a rack with the colors they'll be offering!

i love the butterflies in the logo... i love butterflies so much, i automatically want to like a brand more when they use them :D the next photo is showing the color change... the swatch stick on the left is after sun exposure, the one on the right is before! unfortunately, some of the polishes had already started to fade by the time my camera would focus... sorry :( the only good thing about that is you can actual see in some polishes where the actual colors are changing!

what do you guys think about color changing polish? i'm curious to see how these compare to Del Sol polishes (Del Sol makes all sorts of products that change color in the sun!).

i hope you've enjoyed seeing what i saw at Cosmoprof... it was an amazing experience! i hope that i'm able to go again next year... if i do, i will definitely be posting all about it! Ria :)

Cosmoprof 2012... Color Club

i have the best riding instructor! i told her about the issues i was having finding half chaps that fit... and she had a used pair that fit perfectly... for the bargain price of $20! it doesn't get better than that! i can't even describe the difference riding today with them... no pinched leggies, and much less slipping around the saddle. i also managed to trot without nearly falling off... a definite improvement over last week :) i'm really going to have to start working out... i had no idea what a total body athlete you needed to be for horseback riding!

today we are checking out the offerings Color Club had at Cosmoprof! today was going to be the last Cosmoprof post, i was planning on combining Color Club with their new sister line Ruby Wing... but once i finished editing pictures, i realized the Color Club alone would make a massive post! so, be sure to check back tomorrow for Ruby Wing... polishes that change color in sunlight!

i'll kick right off with what everyone's been talking about... the Color Club Halo Hues collection... which is... HOLOGRAPHICS! woowoo! the company had said at Cosmoprof that the collection would release today (August 15), but it didn't end up happening... not sure when the actual release date will be (sadly!). these next photos are the display and then the swatch sticks in different lighting.

Color Club is answering one of the biggest trends happening now with their Magnetic Force collection!

the name of this collection just seems so sexy to me... Winter Affair. it helps that the tagline is... a little naughty, a lot nice! i do love a good jewel tone... and that's a flakie on the right end!

their In True Fashion collection has some amazing colors... unfortunately, the only picture i got of it is off center and missing polishes! i did take a close up of the amazing purple to green duochrome, though!

the next photo is Color Club's nail wraps, and the four after that are all of displays from the booth... there were so many great collections!

seriously... can you tell how much i was drooling in this booth? polish, polish everywhere! which from all this has you drooling the most? Happy Wednesday... halfway to the weekend! Ria :)
