Julep Maven :: February 2013 It Girl Box

today was 'Pimp My Tack Room' day at the barn... which basically means a couple hours cleaning away mouse poop ;) definitely headed straight for the shower when i got home! my trainer found a saddle while we were working that she's letting me try out... if i like it, she'll sell it to me :D exciting stuff! looking forward to giving it a go tomorrow.

i received my February 2013 Julep Maven box in It Girl today! i also received an extra polish that i had bought as an 'Add-On'. i couldn't resist, because two colors this month are holographic (!!) and only one was coming in the It Girl box! i am more excited about this box than i have been for possibly any box previous... two holos and two gorgeous shimmers... yummo. let's get right into it!

what comes inside the box... (i also put my add-on in, didn't want it to be left out!).

first up is the polishes... the bottom two are the holos! i can't wait to compare the silver to the other silver holos i have.

they also included their new Freedom Polymer Top Coat... i'm really interested to try it out. supposedly it 'goes on like a polish, performs like a gel'. we shall see!

lastly, we have the monthly extra treatie... this month it's an eyelash curler. you will all be shocked (and possibly appalled) to learn that i have never used an eyelash curler before! nope, never!

what do you all think of this months box? and is anyone else as freaked out by eyelash curlers as i am?? Ria :)

Pixi Haul... Clearance at Target!

i didn't think i was going to be able to do a post today... i got a horrible headache earlier! thank goodness for  Advil :) it's weird when you get headaches out of the blue like that, i have them so rarely it always freaks me out when i do! today was my riding lesson, and i'm happy to report that i did not fall off today... my falling off every lesson streak is broken! hooray!! :D

Jewels decided to eat the Tivo remote today, so Mr. Pawlish and i had to go to Best Buy for a new one... sadly, they only sold the expensive ($$!) one with the slide out keyboard... but since we couldn't use Tivo without it, it came home with us. we did put some kind of buyer protection on it, so that if she eats it again within two years, they'll give us a new one at no charge. doggies. *sigh*

since we were close to the other Target, we had Pizza Hut in there and i (natch) had to check out the Pixi display. it was in shambles, but i did find some good stuff! if you have a Target near you, i recommend checking it out!

these Lid Last Shadow Pens weren't on sale, but now i finally have their whole collection! i bought two of these on another day, but i didn't want to do a post one just them... glad i waited :)

on to my clearance items... i bought my first full sized Pixi eye shadow!

and finally, a couple polishes!

there were a couple back ups of things i wanted to get on clearance, but for some reason they weren't half off like everything else... if i get a chance i will pick them up at my local Target, i love getting back ups on sale!

i hope you are having a great week! Ria :)

Nail Candy Mardi Gras and Bling It On Manicure

today i created a manicure using the Nail Candy Mardi Gras collection and Bling It On pen. it didn't end up coming out anything like i expected it to... but that's generally how my nail art goes! mostly it's because i make boo boos and then have to change the game plan to cover them up :) check out my Nail Candy post to find out all about their nail art pens!

i used these three pens for today's mani...

and here's the look i came up with!

to create this look, i painted the whole nail with the lime green pearl, then half the nail on a diagonal with the purple pearl. i then put a stripe in between the two using the Micro-Tip and the blue pearl. i then wanted to add dots with the glitter polish... but i couldn't get the glitter to come out of the Micro-Tip very well, so i changed tactics and used the brush end to go over the purple. i then added a purple stripe, and finished off with a gold rhinestone from the Bling It On pen. it was really easy to make a glue dot using the adhesive with the Micro-Tip! i finished the whole thing off with a coat of Seche Vite, which i had been using as a drying agent through different layers of the mani.

check out to see all their products... they also have a store locator so you can check and see if any of your local stores carry them! these and loads of other products are available on the Nail Candy vending website. the pens retail for $10 and come with two polishes in each pen, the Bling It On pen retails for $8. for application and use tips, check out the Nail Candy Q&A page!

i hope you enjoyed this look... nail art isn't something i'm  particularly good at, but i gave it a good shot! Happy Tuesday! Ria :)

Nail Candy Love Letter Collection Manicure

today i created a nail art mani with the Nail Candy Love Letter collection! the Love Letter collection consists of two pens with two colors each... four colors in total. check out yesterday's post to find out all about Nail Candy pens :)

these polishes do take a long time to dry, so make sure you have ample time to let the polish dry between coats. i actually let it dry for awhile and then applied Seche Vite topcoat between layers... something in my body chemistry keeps polishes from drying quickly so i have to be more careful than most people!

here are what the Love Letter pens look like...

and here's the mani... keep scrolling to see how i created it!

nail art is quite difficult for me, and these pens definitely make it a lot easier! to create this look, i started out painting the whole nail with the red jelly. i then used the brush side of the pink creme to create a chevron French mani. i used the Micro-Tip applicator of the white pearl to outline the chevron, then added a dot to the point of the chevron with the Micro-Tip of the hot pink pearl!

the polish will be somewhat 3D when using the Micro-Tip, so make sure it's fairly dry before adding topcoat... the topcoat will help smooth everything together.

check out to see all their products... they also have a store locator so you can check and see if any of your local stores carry them! this collection isn't available on the Nail Candy vending website yet, but keep checking back! the pens retail for $10 each and come with two polishes in each pen. for application and use tips, check out the Nail Candy Q&A page!

hope all of your weeks have gotten off to a great start! Ria :)

Nail Candy Pens

i'm so excited to share with you all a new to me company called Nail Candy! they make polishes that are designed to make nail art easy... and i'm all about easy nail art! the first Nail Candy post will just show the pens and how everything works, the next couple posts will be manicures done with the pens.

the pens are such a great idea... they have both a traditional nail brush and a very fine patented 'Micro-Tip' applicator that makes doing designs easy. lets get started with pictures, and i will describe all the attributes as we move along!

first up, these two pens make up the Love Letter collection. this collection isn't available on the Nail Candy vending website yet, but keep checking back! the pens retail for $10 and come with two polishes in each pen.

this is the Mardi Gras collection, they are available for purchase right now!

one really exciting thing i discovered is that the pens will come completely apart, so you can mix and match them, or store them more easily!

this Bling It On pen has golden rhinestones in one half, and adhesive in the other. since it has the dual purpose cap, you can paint the whole nail with the adhesive and place the rhinestones, or you can place just a dot of adhesive with the pen and place the stone exactly where you want it! it retails for $8.

here's what the Micro-Tip applicator looks like, it's quite fine!

these Micro-Tip applicators aren't meant to be pushed on, instead, the bottle of polish is malleable and you simply squeeze to get polish to come out! in case the tip gets clogged, each pen comes with two little wires to use clean them out if simply wiping them with polish remover isn't enough. make sure to be gentle with the little wires, i didn't realize how fragile they were and pulled hard on one and it curled all up!

check out to see all their products... they also have a store locator so you can check and see if any of your local stores carry them!

have you tried these out yet? let me know what you think in the comments! Ria :)

Color Club Halo Hues 2013 'Colors So Heavenly' Haul!

i was beyond excited when i saw The Holo Queen's post talking about a NEW Color Club Halo Hues collection! turns out Color Club is putting out a 2013 Halo Hues collection that appears to be dubbed 'Colors So Heavenly'... and like the first Halo Hues collection, all of them are holo! she had ordered them from the seller enospring on ebay, and i hastened to do the same. well, they arrived today, and they look AMAZING! these aren't officially released yet, but apparently Color Club shipped out to some distributors early :D you can keep up with Color Club on their Facebook page!

here is a bottle shot of all these lovelies...

here are the links to individual polish reviews...

i have not yet posted reviews on the original Halo Hues collection, and that is because i bought it directly from Color Club right when they first came out... and i have yet to receive Cloud Nine! at this point, i absolutely cannot recommend ordering directly through them.

i hope you all have had a fantastic Saturday, check back tomorrow for a new to me nail art brand Nail Candy! Ria :)

Zoya Indigo

took a day off from the barn today because it poured yesterday, so the footing for riding wouldn't be great. also... i fell off again at my lesson! i'm pretty frustrated with myself, but keep trying to remind myself it's all part of learning. it's hard to remember... especially when you're a little bit psychotic about failure like i am :)

today's polish is Zoya Indigo, one of the one's i picked up from their recent promo. it's a beautiful navy blue pearl with an ever so subtle shimmer and shot through with holographic particles. sadly, the particles are way more apparent in the bottle than on the nail. the formula is great with opacity, amazing coverage in one coat and perfection at two. it does tend to be a little gloopy, so make sure you've wiped off the brush well before applying to the nail! it dries dull and the holo particles are completely hidden until a shine topcoat is added, so that step is a must with this polish.

two coats Indigo, one coat Seche Vite.

this photo (as most of mine are) is indicative of how the polish will look in bright sunlight... indoors, sometimes this polish just looks like your basic dark navy! you can see a couple of the holo particles glowing out, which is why i chose this photo :)

since there is a dressage show coming up my trainer wants us to go to, we are having an extra lesson tomorrow... barring the weather and bad footing! i know it needs to rain around here because of the severe (and perpetual) water shortage... but man, it's no fun living where is rains every day. it's worse than the city i went to college in, which was not so affectionately nicknamed Drenchburg for its propensity towards rain! i'm sure when it's summer and it hasn't rained in months, then i'll be begging for a good downpour... you always want what you don't have, right? Ria :)

Miss Professional Nail (Miss) has announced the launch of “Candylandia,” their Limited V nail lacquer collection. The flavored, fantasy-themed line presents 12 candy-coated colors with a mouth-watering range of confectionary names. Candylandia was inspired by the edible escapism of Hasbro’s Candy Land board game, a classic favorite spanning six decades. This whimsical collection offers winning colors that will stir up memories of childhood imagination and endless game-playing.
Embark on a magical, manicured journey filled with fun characters and luscious lacquers. Sweeten up your new year when Candylandia hits the shelves this January.

What I Got From The Recent Zoya Promo!

i can't believe how fast we're chugging through January! only a week left and then February... my birthday month :) of course, having a birthday now is less exciting since that just means my age is rolling on up! my best friend and i were born 11 days apart... so, i always have to tell everyone that she's MUCH older than me :D those 11 days make a huge difference, right?!

today i thought i'd share what i picked as my 3 free polishes from the recent Zoya promo. i picked up three classic colors that i've had my eye on but never bought. Indigo is probably the one that has been calling to me the most... blue with holographic shimmer?! yes, please! sadly, the shimmer isn't real evident on the nail... but more on that in a full review coming soon. i loved the little box they were packed in, so i just had to through that in the pic. i was also super excited to find a pamphlet in my package that lists all the colors with swatches! bloggers love that kind of thing ;)

i have my riding lesson tomorrow... the goal is... canter and not fall off! Aramis hasn't been spooking at everything over the past week like he was that day, so i'm feeling good about it. they have off days just like everyone else :)

Happy Tuesday! Ria :)

Basically... Nail Tees

Mr. Pawlish went to the barn with me today since he had the day off, it was nice to have company :) i forced myself to work on my seated trot today... without my feet in the stirrups. that's something i've been terrified to work on for a while now, so i figured... might as well do it when there's someone here if i fall off! turns out, it's not nearly as scary as i thought it would be... all my practicing is definitely paying off :)

today's Basically... post is a basic i use all the time... Nail Tees! they are special Qtips that are super pointy on both ends. they are absolutely amazing for cleaning up little polish slips and booboos while you are applying a mani. there are other brands out there that are similar, but Nail Tees to me always look to be the pointiest... and that's really helpful when you need to get right into a cuticle but don't want to touch anything else!

they come in a plastic box... unfortunately, the lid doesn't fit very tightly so it's not the greatest holder.

sorry the box is so cloudy, i've had it for a long time! it comes with loads so one box will last you a long time. when it's new, it's difficult to even put the lid back on the box because it's so full!

this is what they look like up close... as you can see, the top is much pointier on this one than the bottom. ideally, they both would be super pointy, but quality control isn't perfect, i guess!

you can find these at Sally's Beauty Supply!

what's your favorite easy cuticle cleanup? Ria :)

Rimmel London Lasting Finish Pro Marine Blue

nothing too exciting to report today, Mama Pawlish and i headed over to an American Indian craft show... but didn't find anything. well, anything remotely in my price range! there was an AMAZING hand weaved rug, but it was $1500... and i have a Jewels... aka, a what might i like to chew up today dog. maybe someday!

today's polish is Rimmel London Lasting Finish Pro Marine Blue... which is a pretty good description of the color. it's a medium teal with shimmers... kind of what i'd imagine the Caribbean would look like! the formula is awesome, two easy coats for full opacity and no brushstrokes to be seen. like many of this finish, it does require a shine topcoat to reach its full beauty potential :)

two coats Marine Blue, one coat Seche Vite.

Rimmel's polishes generally fly under the radar, but i haven't found one of their Lasting Finish Pro line that has let me down! Ria :)

imPRESS Press-On Manicure in Control Freak

went to the seminar today on the 'Ideal Protein' diet... man is it expensive! add to the fact that there's parts of the required eating that i flat will not eat... it's a definite no go for me. however, i do have to lose weight somehow... they had a BMI machine at the seminar and i'm SIXTY pounds over my ideal weight. ouch. i jokingly told my mom my dyslexia had caused it all... when i read that i should weigh 128 i thought it said 182 and went for it! ;)

today i tried out the imPRESS Press-On Manicure in Control Freak, a beautiful saturated fuchsia with a subtle shimmer. the packaging is so adorable, the nails come in actual little nail polish like bottle. i was given these as a gift at a blogger dinner while at Cosmoprof, but haven't really had short enough nails to try them out. since i to nubbinize recently, i thought it would be a perfect time to give these babies a go.

here's what you'll see on display in stores...

and how adorable is the little bottle? i will definitely be keeping this!

all the directions for application are on the back of the package.

the application itself really is super easy, the back peels off without any effort and it sticks right on to the nail. the issue comes in because none of the nail sizes fit my real nails! if you have long nail beds with curved nails, i doubt these will fit you either. i'm quite disappointed because i was really looking forward to wearing these. i found the closest fit for my pointer finger, but as you'll see... it wasn't great.

here's the top view... it's too wide for my nail, but pretty close.

a major issue is that it won't lay flat at all to the tip of my nail... it just looks terrible! there's also a tab of leftover plastic, you can see it right in the middle of the photo below. on some of the nails the tab is quite long, it would have to be filed down to be used i think.

it also rises up and exposes the side of my nail... it just doesn't look good!

removal is quite easy, you just peel them up from the sides!

overall, i'm majorly bummed these don't work for me, they come in loads of adorable designs and are sold in drugstores everywhere! if you have tried these and they worked for you, please comment below and describe your experiences :)

i hope you're all having a great weekend! Ria :)

:: these nails were gifted to me at a blogger dinner, these are my honest opinions! ::

Butter London Branwen's Feather

did another easy, laid back day of riding today... i want to get my confidence back up! definitely having two days with zero issues helps :) (if you haven't been by lately, i fell off my horse a few days ago!) i'm excited because i ordered a new bridle today, it's so pretty... it has lots of fancy stitching on it, because i like to be fancy :D

today's polish is Butter London Branwen's Feather. it's a gorgeous eggplant purple with silver and reddish shimmers. the shimmer isn't too noticeable, but it gives the polish a lot of depth, and is really beautiful when the light hits it. like most Butter London polishes, the formula is great, two easy coats for full opacity. it's not very shiny on its own, so you'll want to add a shine topcoat in order to be able to see the shimmers!

two coats Branwen's Feather, one coat Seche Vite.

tomorrow i'm going to a seminar about this crazy diet my doctor wants me to do... i doubt i'm going to go for it because it's super expensive. like really ridiculous. but i'll let you know how it goes! Ria :)

Layla Softouch Effect 07 Queen Bourdeaux

went riding this morning and (happily!) didn't fall off. it is a little scary still... it's wild that falling off one time in six months will do that to you... you'd think you'd remember all those times you didn't fall off! also ran a few errands, at Marshalls i found the cutest Nailtini set... i'd never heard of that brand before. i will definitely be doing a post on them soon.

i picked up today's polish at Ulta... i saw it on their swatch wheel and had to have it! it's Layla Softouch Effect 07 Queen Bourdeaux, a gorgeous dark red that dries down to a matte-like finish with a subtle shimmer. once you add topcoat (i recommend two coats to get it really shiny!) it turns into an amazing cherry red shimmer! i adore multitasking polishes like this. best of all, the formula is awesome, could probably be a thick one coater, but i used two to make sure it was all even and smooth.

two coats 07 Queen Bourdeaux, pinky and middle nails have two added coats of Seche Vite to finish off.

Layla polishes can be found at Ulta and, and for around $10! also check out the English version of Layla's website!

i can't get over how different this polish looks with topcoat... i'm absolutely in LOVE with this multitasking beauty! Ria :)

Funky Fingers Diva

today i made the uber goober move of falling off my horse for the first time... the day i started leasing him. none of my friends and family were surprised by this... which tells you how things in my life generally go :D just gotta be different, i guess! it was pretty embarrassing, he spooked right when we were moving into the canter and i fell right off the back of him. i'm a little bruised, but luckily i landed on my side so i didn't really damage anything but my pride. i did, however, get the wind completely knocked out of me... causing me to panic briefly while i was lying there thinking... OH NO I'M DYING MY LUNG HAS COLLAPSED!... but, of course, it hadn't!

i decided to just do a quick post today with a polish i bought back when i first started blogging... yeah, i've got quite the backlog of polishes! the polish is Funky Fingers Diva, a glitter with loads of pink pieces and a fair amount of silver holo in a clear base. for such an inexpensive polish (i found it at 5 Below, a discount chain in the US... whose shtick is that everything costs $5 or less), it performs amazingly. you get nice coverage in one coat and loads of coverage in two... and best of all, it's easy to work with! no clumping up or refusing to come out of the bottle. you will want to swirl the brush around in there good, though, if it's been sitting awhile like mine was. like most glitters, you'll want to add topcoat to smooth it out and bring out all the sparkle!

two coats Diva, one coat Seche Vite... all over my China Glaze Chiaroscuro mani!

it's impossible to capture the beauty of glitters on film! if you like glitter, i do recommend giving this brand a chance if you see it around. Happy Wednesday! Ria :)
