Julep Marjorie

during today's riding lesson we worked on dressage... it's coming along! i still get frustrated because... well, it's frustrating! there are eleventybillion things to constantly be thinking about and feeling for, but at least we've made progress. that's all i can hope for :) Aramis was spooky and jumping/skittering sideways while we warmed up, but happily he got over himself and was super good for the lesson! love that horse so much.

today's polish is Julep Marjorie from my August 2013 It Girl box. it's pretty mandarin orange shot through with gold shimmers. it's pretty opaque and i was happy with the coverage at two coats, just watch during application because it can get a touch streaky. a coat of topcoat helps it dry and brings out the sparkle!

two coats Marjorie, one coat Seche Vite.

tomorrow i shall try again to make it to the grocery store... this week just hasn't gone as planned so far! can't believe it's Wednesday already. Ria :)

Julep Maven :: August 2013 It Girl Box

i was so happy to make it out to the barn and ride Aramis today! can't believe i hadn't seen him in a week. i'm definitely glad i went to LA, though... such a great experience. not only did i ride horses with my friends, i also went to the most amazing tack store and bought a show helmet and a cross country vest... a baby eventer is born :D

it's time again to share my Julep Maven box! this is the August 2013 It Girl box with no add-ons. there just wasn't anything super exciting this time. i do like the warm colors it came with... they are equally appropriate for late Summer and for Fall! Julep has decided to stop adding so many paper inserts, so it felt like there was very little in the box. i love that since it's their two year anniversary, the box was pink with white flowers... so cute!

here's a look in box... the extra treatie is Forget-Me-Not seeds... totally adorable.

here are the polishes :D

looking forward to trying these babies out... i really like all three of them! Ria :)

China Glaze Urban-Night

didn't make it to the barn today, but it did get some good news... it looks like we're moving to Maryland! i'm still going to be nervous until the actual orders come through, but they are supposedly being filed now. here's hoping!! there's a lot more eventing in Maryland than Tennessee, and i would live less than an hour from all my siblings :)

today's polish is China Glaze Urban-Night, a rich plum purple creme. i needed a dark color since i wasn't able to get off all the gel yesterday! the formula on this one is nice, two easy coats for full opacity. i was surprised because it's a bit warmer and darker than it looks in the bottle. like most China Glaze, this one dries shiny on its own... but i always use a topcoat to help it dry!

two coats Urban-Night, one coat Seche Vite.

i hope everyone's Monday was wonderful! Ria :)

OPI Gelcolor Removal

cleaned my tack really well today, it was filthy! it never ceases to amaze me just how dirty all my horse stuff gets, even though i keep it well conditioned and oiled. i can't believe i haven't seen Aramis since last Saturday... looking forward to riding him tomorrow :D

i wasn't planning on making another post on OPI Gelcolor, but i was so blown away by trying to remove it that i just had to share my thoughts. i had thought it would take a minute or two of soaking in acetone to remove my OPI Russian Navy Gelcolor manicure, just like for glitter polish. WRONG. i spent around 45 minutes soaking my nails and trying to scrape it off with an orange stick cuticle pusher... and still not quite all of it came off. it does not ever get squishy like a normal polish, it stays pretty firm and simply curls up where it's ready to come off!

how strange does this look?!

i would have to say that removing this pretty much decided that i would not be getting these put on again. it doesn't help that my nails had been buffed so thin (because instead of a buffer, the tech used a file!) that i had to nubbinize them all. *sigh* luckily, my nails grow fairly fast.

i hope you've all had fantastic weekends! Ria :)

OPI Russian Navy Gelcolor Manicure

i'm back after taking the week off! i had so much fun in LA, i really loved hanging out with my friends and riding new horses. i actually ended up only riding one horse... and two ponies :D i've never ridden a pony before. these (of course!) were big ponies, but ponies all the same. i'll throw in a picture at the end of me with Dolce, the Halflinger pony i rode on trail ride that overlooks Los Angeles!

i got OPI Gelcolor professionally put on my nails on Sunday, and i'm happy to share the experience with you all! i decided to go ahead and get them put on since Ulta was having a special... $10 instead of the usual $25. since i was going to be in LA for a week, i figured that would be the perfect time to put them to the test! Mr. Pawlish was kind enough to be my photographer :D

throughout most of the process, an antimicrobial solution like alcohol was used to wipe the nails... pretty much between each step, even the very end! one thing i didn't like about this Ulta was that they didn't use a nail buffer on the nail... just the nail file. i feel like that is way to harsh to use all over the nail!

since no tips were used, the tech just filed my natural nail shape, leaving them fairly long. the gel applies just like nail polish... which means you are at risk for air bubbles and lumps... both of which i'm sorry to say i have.

each coat of gel has to be cured under a UV light, it felt quite hot on my fingers! once we got to the topcoat, which also must be cured, it BURNED under the UV light. i'm not sure what was different about the topcoat, but it really made my nails burn and ache! the lovely thing about this process is that it's dry after being cured... unlike normal polish which can take forever to dry (especially with my skin chemistry!).

here's the finished look! i got Russian Navy, which is similar to the regular OPI Russian Navy, but has more noticeable shimmers that include pink along with the original blue.

as you can see, the gel backed off the tips, which is a problem i have with normal polish. there is also a polish lump on my ring finger... i was really not happy with that. the tech also got gel onto some of my cuticles, luckily most of it came off in the shower. i do like how thick it makes my nails look and the glossiness.

my thumb chipped pretty quickly, but i thought it was interesting to be able to see the individual gel layers!

and here we have the manicure as of today, Friday. that's about 6 days of wear. it chipped less than normal polish, but i still did have some chipping. it also did not stay as glossy as i'd hoped!

all in all, i do like the lasting power of the gels, but i would not go back to Ulta if i were to get them again. i think a true nail salon would do a better job... i felt like nails were an afterthought at the Ulta in my area! the tech didn't even apply the topcoat all over the Russian Navy on my right hand... it was just frustrating. however, the tech was super nice which did help make up for it.

are gel nails something you have or would try? what do you think of them? let me know if you have any other questions! Ria :)

i leave you with the beautiful Haflinger, Dolce :D

Sally Hansen Sugar Coat... Round 2 Haul!

today i planned on doing my OPI gel experience... but i just had to share the new Sally Hansen Sugar Coat collection! i saw these pop up on a few blogs and have been drooling to have them for my very own... and found them at Rite Aid today!

i just had to let you guys know that Rite Aid has all Sally Hansen 40% off... this is the perfect time to stock up on collections :) plus, with their rewards, if you spend $15 in Sally Hansen you get $5 to use on your next purchase, and you get two of those... $10 bucks for money you were going to spend anyway! my Rite Aid had the Sugar Coats for $5.99 (which is the same price as CVS, and the best i've seen), so each polish was only $3.59. i'm over the moon with happiness!

the new Sugar Coat collection has spiced it up with some shimmer textures... i'm hoping i like those as much as the originals, what really drew me to the original collection was that it was all cremes. if you search Sugar Coat on my blog, you can see swatches and reviews of all the originals!

here's a look at the newbies...

i'm going to be in LA with friends next week, so my next post will probably be Thursday! i hope you all have fantastic weeks! Ria :)

Naked Nails!

today's post is not for the faint of heart (or stomach!). i thought i'd share what my actual nails look like... with literally nothing on them, not even a protein coat! i'm going to LA next week, so when Ulta offered OPI gel manis for $10, i was ecstatic. i'm getting them put on tomorrow, will post about the experience tomorrow night :)

my nails have lots of issues... the most glaringly ugly being the yellow staining. i had them pretty well grown out... until a green Zoya made them look all fungified again! the white on my ring finger is due to my peeling issues... but that one looks better than the others since most of the yellow peeled off. the pointer finger nail splits a lot, so i can never get that nice square shape, and there are also some bumps on the nail... not sure what those are!

without further ado...

i plan on an update post in a few months... hopefully i will have been able to get rid of the stains by then!

Happy Saturday! Ria :)

Orly Twilight

i'm going to LA next week with a friend! i'm super excited to go ride horses down there, and check out their tack stores... the stores around Monterey are sorely lacking. i've got a few (okay, more than a few) more things i need for my first 3-day event... which is about a month away now! had a short but very productive lesson today and am joining up with the younger girls jumping lesson again tomorrow :)

today's polish is Orly Twilight. this is another one i've been waiting for the right polish to layer it over, and i thought yesterday's Sally Hansen complete Salon Manicure Thinking of Blue would be perfect. Twilight is a clear base packed with loads of light blue, purple, and green shimmer particles. i love how it looks like the night sky when placed over blue. the formula is a little tricky, it packs shimmer onto the first nail... then each nail after gets a little less, so some will need more coats. i think this is one that would benefit by turning the bottle upside down before use! a coat of topcoat will bring out all the sparkles.

1-2 coats Twilight, one coat Poshe, all over Sally Hansen complete Salon Manicure Thinking of Blue.

i hope you're all having fantastic weeks! Ria :)

Sally Hansen complete Salon Manicure Thinking of Blue

i did horsie errands today instead of riding. i needed a few things for feeding him his supplement... like a way to lock up my food bin. i decided to go with a chain and a padlock, which involved getting chain cut at the hardware store. Mama Pawlish went with me, and we had a long 'discussion' on how heavy duty the chain needed to be. basically, i refused to use the thin, wimpy chain :D she talked me out of the really heavy duty one... thank goodness, because that one wouldn't even have worked for what i needed. you really should just listen to your mom :)

today's polish is Sally Hansen complete Salon Manicure Thinking of Blue. it's a medium blue creme, not ground breaking but lovely all the same! the formula is nice, you can get away with one coat, but it looks much more rich at two. it dries glossy on its own, i just need topcoat to help dry polish!

two coats Thinking of Blue, one coat Poshe.

i also got a new watch today... i was thinking about getting a sport one anyway, and i when i looked at my usual watch today i realized i had beat it up so badly the crystal is about to fall out! i am extremely hard on jewelry, to say the least. i love that watch, so i definitely plan on getting the crystal replaced. in the meantime, i bought a cute pink Timex Ironman, because... why not? Ria :)

July 2013 ipsy Glam Bag

as promised, today i have the July 2013 ipsy Glam Bag to share with you all! it's kind of fun to get two bags at the same time... but i do prefer to spread it out. i'm one of those people that just loves to get packages in the mail... i used to threaten to box up my stuff and mail it to myself :D

i adore the pink makeup bag everything came in... it's so nice to have a vinyl bag that can easily be wiped down if something spills or leaks! the theme of the month is Beach Beauty... i love the theme, but i think the card kind of looks creepy... what do you think?

i'm super excited to play with the Pop Beauty Pouty Pop Crayon in Fuchsia Flirt... lip products are definitely my favorite, after polish, of course :D i've heard a lot about BH Cosmetics, i think they are about on par with Elf products. i'm interested to check out these eye shadows... these samples are called the California Collection and are apparently one of each from three different palettes. i did a quick swatch with my fingers and the purple isn't very pigmented at all but the gold is promising. let me know if you want an in depth review!

last up we have a mixed lot of. there's humidity resistant spray from Big Sexy Hair called Weather Proof... there's no humidity in California, but something i would definitely have had need of back in the South! i was pretty interested to see a Coola sunscreen sample... i've heard a lot of rumblings about them lately. since i'm not concerned with whether or not a product is organic, i probably wouldn't have tried this on my own. i love that it's made out of minerals, though! lastly, there's the Demeter Salt Air roll on perfume oil. i tried this out and it does remind me of salt air... but on me there also pulls some notes of cheap floral. i'm bummed i'm not a fan, i had high hopes!

hope you enjoyed seeing the July bag! remember to let me know if you'd like an in-depth review on anything.

Happy Wednesday! Ria :)

June 2013 ipsy Glam Bag

it's finally here! i finally accepted that the original June bag i had been sent was forever lost in the mail and got in touch with ipsy via their website. they got back to me within the next business day and fairly quickly after that had a replacement bag in the mail to me! i was disappointed they couldn't find the original one, but that's okay. apparently you can get one replacement bag sent out per month... i'm hoping this never happens to me again! since it was so late, i had to get some different products than i was going to receive in my initial bag... but that's fine :)

the June 2013 ipsy Glam Bag theme is On The Wild Side... i love the little leopard bag!

there are a couple eye products from J. cats, a brand i'm unfamiliar with. the eyelashes are real human hair... but since that kind of grosses me out, i probably won't be using them. the glittery eye shadows are super cute, looking forward to swatching them!

the next eye product is a gel liner from Cailyn, another brand i haven't heard of before. it's in the color Iron, which is a metallic greY... gorgeous!

i love the packaging, as it has a cute little brush built into the lid. that would make it super convenient to toss in your purse for touch ups!

last up is a cream blush from NYX in the color Glow, and a lipliner from Starlooks in Tickle Me Pink. i haven't heard of Starlooks before either... i love trying out new brands :)

my July 2013 ipsy Glam Bag actually came today as well... check back tomorrow to see what was in that one. as always, let me know if there's anything you'd like to see a review on! Ria :)

Sally Hansen Extra Strength Spray-On Shower-Off Hair Remover

i'm back after taking the weekend off! Saturday i just wasn't in the mood, and i went to a jumping clinic on Sunday... where i fell off and managed to land on my head again. falling off isn't that big of a deal, but i sure wish i'd stop using my head as a crash pad! this of course means i need another new helmet... glad i got five whole uses out of that one. *sigh* it looks like Tipperary has a replacement program, hopefully that will work out. more drama in the moving scene... there are no jobs left in Tennessee! as of this moment, it looks like we're heading to Maryland. i was majorly tripping, but after researching, there are wayyy more eventing opportunities there, so it's probably a great thing :)

today i'd like to share with you something a little different... still a beauty product, but definitely not for the nails! it's the Sally Hansen Extra Strength Spray-On Shower-Off Hair Remover. i've been trying it out on my legs, arm pits, and bikini area... and i'm pretty impressed. it claims to be a 3 minute formula... but i leave it on for the maximum 10 minutes as i didn't see much result in 3.

what attracted me to this product is that it's a spray-on foam... so you don't have to touch it. the problem is, it's a foam, so it tends to drip off in places. once you're ready to take it off, i recommend using something to scrape it off with, and that will help the hair come off! most of the hair is gone after use, but there will probably still be some strays and stubble left.

it does tingle/burn as it's working, so if you're sensitive this might not be for you. it also has loads of warnings about where not to use it, by the warning label it's not for the bikini area! so, that's a use at your own risk scenario :) it's under $10 and doesn't have the horrible smell depilatory creams used to have. final assessment... i like it, but i'm going to try other products... i'm hoping for something that doesn't drip off and takes off hair even better.

the packaging is pretty cute!

i always plan to add more beauty products to the blog, but nail polish is always distracting me! hope you found this post helpful! Ria :)

Pixi Clearance at Target!

had a private riding lesson this morning, then had lunch with the fam at my favorite restaurant :) we then headed over to Target for groceries and other schtuff... like Mane and Tail Shampoo, which is sold out EVERYWHERE. i really want to try it in my own hair, but i don't want to take mine from my locker at the barn. apparently, there has been a run on the shampoo. most shops have had the conditioner, but nobody has the shampoo. hopefully i'll be able to get some soon and then review it on the blog for human use :D

while at Target i noticed they had some Pixi on clearance! i just picked up a polish in Real Rose and a backup eyeliner in True Teal. they even had some palettes (including the Early Bird Kit!) marked down. most things on clearance were half off, although i didn't think to check the prices on the palettes. i highly recommend checking out your local Pixi section at Target, the one i was at has loads of different things marked down!

here's my little clearance purchase :)

i wish i had thought to take to a picture of the Pixi display while i was there! i hope you all have a fantastic weekend! Ria :)

Maybelline Color Show Polka Dots... Clearly Spotted

printed out my entry form for my first 'real' event, a full-on 3-day event... how exciting is that?! it's a good feeling to have your life moving in exactly the direction you want it to :) now for the bad news... the person who was supposed to get my husband's orders for Tennessee together screwed up... so now the whole process has to start over again and who knows where we'll end up! i'm pretty frustrated because i have settled into the whole idea of moving to Tennessee. eesh. it'll work out, though... where ever we end up!

i've been itching to try out Clearly Spotted from the Maybelline Color Show Polka Dots, so i slapped it on today over my Julep Nadia mani from yesterday. it made for a cute bumble bee/speckled egg kind of look! Clearly Spotted is different sizes of black and white hex glitter in a clear base... and here's the surprise... it's matte! i love matte glitter, not the least because it's so much easier to photograph :) it's goes on fairly easily with just a little placing to cover up bare spots and it looks perfect with just one coat. i used a coat of topcoat to seal in the whole look!

one coat Clearly Spotted, one coat Poshe, all over my Julep Nadia mani.

i love how this polish looks over the slight shimmer in Nadia. have you guys picked up any of the Polka Dots? i'm thinking i'm just going to stick with this one... but you never know, i might get the rest in a weak moment! Ria :)

Julep Nadia

finally got a new helmet after compromising my old one with that hard fall on my head. i'm loving my new one because it's bright pink AND heavily vented so it's loads cooler on my head. just call me a hot head :D we jumped in the lesson today, no better way to break in a new helmet. working on learning to stay over my feet better... Aramis was really good today and didn't dump me when i ended up on his neck a few times after jumps! he's a such lovely boy when he wants to be :)

today's July 2013 Julep Maven It Girl polish is Nadia. it's a pearly pastel yellow shimmer that immediately made me think of daffodils... even daffodils are usually a bit more of a saturated, bright yellow than this polish is. use a careful hand when applying, this one wants to pool pigment more on the sides, leaving a sheer middle stripe. with care, you can get full opacity in two coats! topcoat brings out all the sparkles and helps dry the polish.

two coats Nadia, one coat Seche Vite.

i don't always like yellows on my skin tone, but this is a pretty one! can't believe it's halfway through the week already. Ria :)

Julep Tracy

since we had a show last weekend, i gave Aramis Monday off and rode him bareback today. even though it wasn't a super intensive show, i like to keep him happy :) the new boots i ordered came today... they are a little tight in the toe box, but i think the next size up wouldn't fit in the heel. i love how they look, and they are going to be perfect to wear around the barn. they're even cute enough to wear around town!

today's polish is Julep Tracy from my July 2013 Julep Maven It Girl box! it's a cool, shimmery blue that is in their new Sea Salt Finish... which is their answer to the texture trend! to me it looks just like you've applied blue shimmering sand to your nails, super pretty. it has silver and colors in the particles which really adds dimension. the formula is pretty easy to work with, use two coats to avoid patchiness! no topcoat needed with this one :)

two coats Tracy.

i'm loving this polish, the only thing i didn't like was the long dry time. however, it may take less time to dry on you because my wacky body chemistry makes for long dry times on most polishes! Ria :)

New Maybelline Collections Spotted at Rite Aid!

i was pretty wiped after the Dressage show yesterday, that's why there was no post! i was also crabby because i got a sun rash... luckily, it seems to be going away. aloe with cooling stuff in it is a magical thing! the show went okay, i wasn't happy with how we did, but very happy with the experience. i've officially done a 'real' horse show :)

i was in search of Mane and Tail shampoo (to use on myself... it was so amazing on Aramis i need some for my hair!) that appears to be sold out everywhere, which is why i wandered into Rite Aid. again, they were sold out of the shampoo, but they did have some new Maybelline Color Show collections i hadn't heard of!

the collections are Polka Dots (which is sheer bases with black and white glitter) and Holographic. imagine how excited i was to see the word holographic! sadly, i researched the collections quickly on my phone, and it turns out that Holographics are actually just duochromes :( i hate a bait and switch!

here's the display...

i was majorly bummed by the 'Holographic' polishes, i have duochromes like these already. i decided against most of the Polka Dots because of their sheerness, but i did pick up Clearly Spotted, which is black and white different sized glitters in a clear base!

have you all picked up any of these polishes? what did you think? Ria :)

Maybelline Color Show Crushed Candy

went to a local feed store to pick up a bag for Aramis... he needs a bit of a supplement now since i've been working him all the time :) i can only imagine what the poor sales people said about me when i left... i confess to being a complete city slicker! after i paid he said to meet him around back... and i just stared at him blankly and said... 'around back...?' turns out the feed is kept in the warehouse, which you actually can drive through... but i didn't realize that so i had to back up and turn around. by then the poor guy was just walking the bag out towards the car. i am a city girl, through and through! at least i know how to buy horse feed... now :D

today's polish is Maybelline Color Show Crushed Candy. it's a shimmery, saturated pink that has bit of blue shimmer and a bit of glass fleck. the formula is easy to work with, but a bit sheer. i used three coats, and you can still see a bit of VNL if you look closely! three coats offers enough coverage for me, though, and i'm pretty picky. don't be terrified by the first coat which makes it seem like you'll never achieve any sort of opacity! a coat of topcoat really helps to bring out all the shimmers and make the polish shine.

three coats Crushed Candy, one coat Poshe.

tomorrow is the fancy pants dressage show! i gave Aramis a complete beauty parlor today... he's so soft and shiny now, i love it. here's hoping the show goes well! Ria :)

Sally Hansen Sugar Coat... Lick-O-Rich

since today was Independence Day here in the US, i decided to skip a day in my liquid dinner diet. for lunch Mama Pawlish, Mr. Pawlish and i went to my favorite Japanese restaurant that is right on the wharf. parking was crazy... we really lucked out and found someone leaving who even gave us his parking pass with time left over... so we managed to get a free spot :D for dinner we had the oh so American hot dog, beanie weenies, and potato salad... yummay!

today's polish is the last of the Sally Hansen Sugar Collection... Lick-O-Rich. it's a licorice (surprise!) black creme that dries to that fun textured finish. i love that it looks like asphalt on your nails... super cool.  this one is really easy to work with, just apply two coats of Lick-O-Rich and no topcoat! because of the dimension, it's also easier to wear than your typical black creme... this would be a great 'starter' black :)

two coats Lick-O-Rich.

Happy 4th of July, i hope you had a wonderful day where ever in the world you are!! Ria :)

Sally Hansen Sugar Coat... Cherry Drop

had a lesson today, then went to lunch with a friend and Mr. Pawlish... we ended up sitting at lunch for like three hours! i've always been notorious for chatting away in restaurants :) after multiple plans for something to do for the 4th of July... Mr. Pawlish and i have decided to just stay home and have chili dogs and potato salad! yummay.

today's Sally Hansen Sugar Coat polish is Cherry Drop. it's a red creme that i just had to wear for the 4th! this dries to a textured finish that is slightly more shiny than others in this collection, which makes it look a little less texturey. i feel like you can still see a little nail line after two coats, but once it textures up it isn't noticeable. remember not to use a topcoat!

two coats Cherry Drop.

do any of you guys have plans for tomorrow? even if you're not in the US :D

i have a lesson in the morning, but i think the rest of the day will be spent at home... i wanted to go to a restaurant on the beach, but i doubt there will be any parking! Ria :)

Sally Hansen Sugar Coat... Cotton Candies

the heat wave continues here in Monterey... it's so strange to have it be so warm. i think it's a little cooler than it was a couple days ago, but not much. i'm hoping it'll be much cooler for the dressage show this weekend, those coats are hot!

today's Sally Hansen Sugar Coat polish is Cotton Candies! the names with these are so hit and miss... i think of Cotton Candy as a light, pastel pink. however, Cotton Candies is a hot pink Barbie creme! i'm in love the with the color, though, so no complaints here. like the others in the collection, it dries to a texturized finish like coarse sandpaper. this one is pretty easy to work with, and is perfect in two coats. remember, no topcoats with Sugar Coats!

two coats Cotton Candies.

Happy Tuesday! Ria :)

Sally Hansen Sugar Coat... Bubble Plum

i have put myself back on the smoothie diet... where i basically just eat lunch, a snack, and a smoothie for dinner. i have lost a lot of weight on it in the past, and i'm sure hoping to again. at any rate, i hope to lose some water weight for this weekend, when i'll be sporting some white riding breeches... there's nowhere to hide in those babies!

today's Sally Hansen Sugar Coat is Bubble Plum. i love this name as it's perfect for this polish... it's a bubblegummy pink with strong plummy purple undertones! like the others in this collection it's a creme that dries to a textured finish. this one is easy to work with, just shake the bottle a little before application and apply two coats for full opacity... with no topcoat!

two coats Bubble Plum.

i can't remember if i've mentioned this yet, but i got an awesome deal on eBay for a pair of boots to wear around the barn. i was hoping to have them by Friday... but shipping would have been $60! i would still have saved a lot, but i couldn't turn my awesome deal into a good deal by paying outrageous shipping charges. i'm super excited for them to get here, though!

i hope you've all had fantastic Mondays! Ria :)
